Speaker: Clive Wilkins Jones

Dereham-born George Borrow (1803-1881), novelist and translator, was also a pioneer in the study of romany gypsies, particularly their language. However, some argue that Borrow's attitude to romany gypsies was racist. They argue that there was a straight line from Borrow and his successors, the so-called gypsylorists, to the policies of the racial hygienists of Hitlerite Germany, for whom romany gypsies were 'criminally-inclined primitives'.

All Historians Group sessions start at 10:15am for tea, & coffee (£1 in the honesty box) and the talk will start at 10:30am. There will be an opportunity for further refreshments and a chat afterwards.
